Job Description of a Dialysis Nurse

Dialysis nursing is related to nephrology nursing. The nurses are required to care for patients that suffer from kidney diseases. A dialysis nurse is accountable and responsible for prescriptions, coordination, and delegation of the care that is offered to patients who are going through acute and chronic peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis. A dialysis nurse has to be trained to offer both types of dialysis. The nurse is required to evaluate the patient and plan for their care. They also deliver the care and determine if it is appropriate for the specific situation. The nurse is responsible for training and supervising the rest of the dialysis staff. It is the nurse’s duty to coordinate care between the different health care professionals who are attending to the patient.

Nurses have to be trained to deal with the technical skills involved in the dialysis process. The dialysis nurse should be able to identify and treat any complications that may arise from the process. These complications include medication reactions, bleeding, dehydration, and fluid overload. It is the nurse’s responsibility to teach the patient and their family or caregiver about dialysis related issues including homecare and proper nutrition. This is a physically demanding job that requires a nurse to remain on their feet for several hours. The nurse will also have to help patients to move around and relocate equipment. Dialysis is usually scheduled and patients have routines but dialysis nurses should be prepared to attend to emergencies at any time of the day or night. Dialysis nurses may be required to work nights, weekends, and on holidays in case of emergencies.

Nurse Injecting Patient For Renal Dialysis TreatmentTo become a dialysis nurse, an individual has to be registered as a nurse in any state. Nephrology nurses have to attain a basic nursing degree. This can be a bachelor’s or associate degree. The degree has to be obtained from an accredited institution. Once an individual graduates from a nursing program, they have to take the national licensing examination, NCLEX-RN. It is important to have an unrestricted license. Registered nurses should be able to work in all the states. A nurse has to fulfill a certain number of work hours. A minimum of 2000 hours of work experience is required. These hours have to be achieved more than 2 years before the nurse applies for certification. Registered nurses can only qualify after working full-time as nephrology nurses. They need to have experience working with diabetes patients.

It is possible to get a dialysis nursing position after acquiring a license but some employers require candidates who are certified. If you have experience as a nephrology nurse, you can acquire certification in the area. To become certified, an applicant has to be a licensed as a registered nurse and worked for a minimum of 2000 hours caring for renal patients. This experience has to be attained over a period of two years. Certification also requires a minimum of 15 hours of continuing education. The certification is provided by the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission.

An applicant can only become certified after passing the Certified Dialysis Nurse exam. The exams are available in different states and cities across the country. They are administered by the American Nephrology Nurses’ Association. It costs $250 to take the exam for the first time and half this price if you are taking it for the second time. Most of the exam questions focus on a nurse’s hemodialysis knowledge. The rest of the exam covers renal failure physiology, renal transplant, and peritoneal dialysis. Nurses are required to answer 200 questions during the certification exam. The NNCC recommends some reference books, which applicants can use to prepare for the exam. This gives applicants the best opportunity to pass the exams. Applicants can also prepare for the exam by taking an online test. The practice test is offered by the NNCC and it allows registered nurses to adequately prepare for their certification exam.

The certification credential is valid for up to 3 years. Renewal is required after the three years if a nurse wants to continue practicing. To renew your certification, you need to have spent about 50% of your time in employment interacting directly with nephrology patients. At least 1000 hours of direct care is required for the 3 years for certification renewal. An applicant also needs to have a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education. The training and education should focus on nephrology. Applicants who do not fulfill the required number of hours in continuing education can take the certification exam again.

Dialysis Nurse Salary in Canada, Australia, and UK

Dialysis nurse salary also differs depending on the country that an applicant wants to work in. In Australia, a dialysis nurse can earn an average of $74,650 annually. In Canada, a dialysis nurse earns about $53,615 per year. In the UK, an applicant for this position can earn between £23,000 and £28,000 per year. It is important to note that these salaries differ depending on the city that an applicant wants to work in. The demand for the position also determines the amount of money that an applicant earns. If there is a high demand for nurses who specialize in nephrology, an applicant is more likely to earn a high salary

Dialysis nurses are on high demand as the number of people who require dialysis increase. An applicant in the United States can earn between $60,000 and $81,000 depending on the state. States like New York, where there may be a higher demand for the position pay more for dialysis nursing. Nurses are required to fulfill various requirements before they can qualify for dialysis nursing.
