The median national physician assistant salary is about $92,000 per year, or $44 per hour. This falls well in the range of the middle 50% of employees in the field. This range in salaries runs from $84,000 to $101,000. The hourly pay rate for this income range is between $41 and $49. Those working in the lowest 10th percentile should expect a salary around $77,000, which is equal to $37 per hour. However, those working in the top 10th percentile can easily make six figure salaries. $109,000 or higher can be made by these professionals. This is equivalent to about $52 per hour.
Many factors determine the annual incomes of a physician assistant. These factors may include geographic location and type of employment. For instance, a physician assistant working in a metropolitan area should expect a higher salary than one working in a rural area. This is the case for many industries, however. Type of employment is also very important. Working in a hospital should create a higher income for a physician assistant. Working in a college or university, on the other hand, could lead to a much lower income.
Benefits will add to the total compensation taken home by a physician assistant every year. Benefits paid for by the employer could include social security, pension, and health care insurance, among others. The total compensation package for the average physician assistant after benefits is around $128,000 every year.
