Hospitalist Salary

Hospitalist Salary

The hospitalist is the health care professional who deals with examining, diagnosing and then treating all the hospitalized patients. It is the duty of the hospitalist physician to see the patients in the ER, to order various tests and treatments as well as to keep in touch with other specialty and primary care physicians, in order to come up with the best treatment plan for each patient. Generally speaking, becoming a hospitalist requires at least two to four years of experience in the field. The average yearly salary of a trained specialist is of around $203,000 in the United States of America.

Pay Scale In Different Parts Of The United States

Hospitalist physicians are paid differently across the United States. Taking the state of Minnesota as an example, this one pays its specialists an average of $218,000 a year, which means around $15,000 over the national average. On the second place in the hop highest paying states for hospitalists there is Indiana, which pays them a mean yearly salary of $212,000, followed by Georgia with $209,000and Nevada with $205,000.

Hospitalist Job Description

As you may have figured out already from the name of the position, the hospitalist is the professional who treats its patients only in the hospital. In other words, hospitalists never hold clinic appointments, nor do they see their patients in an office or private practice outside of the hospital. These professionals work either for a hospitalist contracting company or for a state owned hospital.

More and more med school students have shown an increasing interest in becoming hospitalists over the past several years. These professionals work in environments where their patients are usually admitted overnight, and one of the greatest aspects associated with this position is the fact that the hospitalist physician actually has a block scheduling, meaning that these professionals can take some time off even though the working schedule can turn out to be demanding at times. These professionals do not need to deal with office and administrative tasks either, such as billing, marketing or staffing. These tasks are quite daunting for other health care professionals, especially for those who also have their own private practice.

The duties and responsibilities of the hospitalist are many. These professionals refer their patients to the most appropriate medical specialists, they take part in different conferences and meetings and they also participate in different continuing education activities. It is also the duty of the hospitalist to direct and coordinate the patient care activities and to write the summaries for the patient discharge, then sending them to the primary care doctors.

These professionals also prescribe treatment regimens and medications, they order and interpret blood and laboratory tests and, in some cases, they can also train or supervise the residents and the medical students who work at the hospital.

hospitalistsBecoming a hospitalist requires several different degree programs, just like any other medical specialty. The schooling for hospitalist physicians can take as much as 10 years, and the main requirement in order to pursue a career in this field is to have a medical degree in internal medicine. In addition to this, future hospitalist physicians will also need to enroll in different fellowship and residency programs that will help them enrich their knowledge and improve their skill set. It is highly recommended to opt for a major that emphasizes on natural sciences, and to consider some coursework in biochemistry, genetics as well as organic chemistry.

The med school will take several years to complete, and while the first two years are typically focused on medical programs, the last two will consist of clinical field work. The last two years of med school are often the most important ones as well, given the fact that they will prepare you for your career as a hospitalist physician and they will also prepare you for the residency program. The residency program typically lasts for three years.

Certification Options

If you have decided to pursue a lucrative career in the medical field as a hospitalist physician, then you should know that your certification will play a crucial role, given the fact that this is one of the specialists that have grown very rapidly over the past several years. Along with the growing interest in this field, so did the demand for hospitalist physician certification. The certification in this case is provided by the ABPS, or the American Board of Physician Specialists, who is committed to providing the certification solely to those who have managed to demonstrate their competency, knowledge and skills required to get the hospitalist board certification.

The American Board of Physician Specialists was also the first organization to fully acknowledge the importance of offering these health care professionals a certification that would help them differentiate themselves from the rest. The testing standards for this type of certification have always been very rigorous, and the eligibility requirements are very strict: all the participants must be skilled and highly trained, and they must have completed a residency program of at least three years in the field. Experience certainly plays a crucial role here.

At the same time, hospital physicians who live and work in the country of Australia should expect to earn anywhere between Au$122,000 and Au$162,000.

Verdict On Hospitalist Salary

Working as a hospitalist physician can be very stressful and demanding given the fact that you will be working directly with people who usually need urgent medical attention. However, it must be said that not only is this one of the fastest growing fields of medicine, but it also happens to be one of the most sought-after and highest paid ones at the same time. While it is true that becoming a hospitalist may take up to a decade of study and experience, the salary is certainly great.
