obstetricianAn obstetrician is a physician and must therefore attend medical school. If you are making this decision whiles in high school, the first thing you need to do is make sure you take classes in biology, chemistry and physics. This enhances your profile when you go for medical school interview. Make sure you get excellent grades and take part in extracurricular activities.

You should then go to college and obtain an undergraduate degree. Coursework in pre-med may be helpful but not a requirement. Medical school admission requires at least 3 years of college level studies. Although a bachelor’s degree is not a requirement to enter medical school, you will most certainly not get accepted in practice without one. During your undergraduate studies, focus on subjects such as biology, anatomy, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and genetics.

You will need a medical degree in order to become an obstetrician. So your next step will be to apply to medical school. You will have to write and pass the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) to gain admission. Medical school should take 4 years to complete.

The next step is to apply for residency in an obstetrician program. You do this in your third year of medical school. This involves another 4 years of training. During this period, you will undergo supervised training in a clinical setting in the specialty you have chosen, in this case obstetrics.

After you complete the residency program, your next step will be to write and pass the state medical board exams and also pass the specialization exams. Then you become an obstetrician.

Obstetrician Salary in Other Countries (Canada, UK and Australia)

In the United Kingdom (UK), obstetricians earn anywhere from £80,000 – £300,000 determined by many factors. In Australia, those working as consultant obstetricians for the government healthcare program can expect to earn up to AU$210,000 per annum determined by years of experience. The average obstetrician salary in Canada is about CA$125,000 per annum. The range is between CA$80,000 and CA$170,000.

Because all obstetricians are also trained gynecologists, an obstetrician salary is almost the same for a gynecologist.
