Pathologist Job Description

To put it simple, pathologists are professionals who diagnose and closely study various diseases. They work in reference laboratories, medical centers as well as community hospitals and, in some instances, they also work in the private sector. Most of the pathologists these days choose to become either medical examiners or coroners, given the high salary.

As mentioned above, pathologists usually spend a lot of time in the laboratory where they connect organs, body cells, tissue samples as well as blood and other fluids and carefully analyze them under the microscope. Based on the results, the pathologist can determine the nature of the medical disease as well as what caused it in the first place. It is not uncommon for a pathologist to also perform autopsies, which are commonly referred to as post mortems.

The pathologist has numerous duties and requirements, from collecting and correctly managing the samples to studying all the potential causes of infection, from parasites, fungi and viruses to bacteria. These professionals work directly with surgeons, and they provide an immediate diagnosis on different surgical specimens. On the other hand, the forensic pathologists are hired in the legal system and their duty is to carefully interpret the biological evidence in civil and criminal cases.

pathologistIf you are passionate about collecting tissue and blood samples, analyzing them and ordering and managing different diagnostic tests, then becoming a pathologist may be the right thing for you. Pathologists aim to solve some of the most complex and difficult medical mysteries, and to provide primary care physicians with information they need.

The first step towards becoming a pathologist is studying chemistry and biology while still in school. After that, it is important to earn a Bachelorțs Degree followed by a Master’s degree in biochemistry, microbiology or pathology. The Master’s Degree is very important for your future, if you plan to pursue a certification.

Attending medical school is equally important, as you will need to study for four years in order to get your MD degree. After that, you will need to work extra four years in a residency program, in a hospital. Only after you complete your four-year residency program you can pursue your certification – an aspect of utmost importance for all medical pathologists who work in the United States of America is getting their license, which is essential.

Pathologist Certification

Certification is also important for working legally in the US, and it is provided by the American Board of Pathology. The ABP offers primary certification for pathologists through three main routes: pathology anatomic, pathology clinical or pathology anatomic/clinical. There are several different subspecialty certificates that every pathologist can pursue, and they can combine two subspecialties if they want. Before applying for your Board Certification, it is extremely important to pursue specialty training which can last between three and four years.
