Pediatric surgeons are highly trained health care providers who examine, diagnose and surgically treat kids. These professionals deal with a wide array of health problems, from the most common ones such as hernias or appendicitis to the rather advanced problems, like serious congenital anomalies or even cancer.
Simply put, a pediatric surgeon is trained to deal with infants, children as well as adolescents, and it often happens that pediatric surgeons have higher salaries than most of their peers, given the difficulty posed by working with children’s bodies which are less robust and physically smaller. On average, a general pediatric surgeon can earn between $370,000 and up to $462,000 a year, depending on the type of surgery they specialize in, their employer as well as the state where they work.
Pay Scale In Different Areas Of The United States
Texas pays its pediatric surgeons a mean yearly salary of $320,000, while Illinois pays them as much as $398,000 a year. At the same time, North Carolina rewards its pediatric surgeons with $403,000 a year, while Tennessee pays them $380,000 and Georgia as much as $405,000 a year.
Pediatric Surgeon Job Description
As mentioned above, these health care providers are trained to take care of infants, children, young adults, adolescents as well as fetuses, and they often deal with reparations of various abdominal defects, removing tumors, separation of conjoined twins, correction of various congenital malformations and so on and so forth.
There are several different subfields when it comes to pediatric surgery, as surgeons can choose to specialize in one of the many different areas, from pediatric oncology and trauma to neonatal and prenatal surgery. The neonatal surgery, for instance, focuses on treating newly born or prematurely born infants, which often have low birth weight and various birth defects. On the other hand, the fetal surgery focuses on treating infants while they are still in the uterus (reparation of congenital hernias, cesarean section and so on).
Pediatric surgeons who specialize in trauma surgery, however, encounter critical injuries sustained by children who require immediate medical attention (such as those who were involved in severe accidents). Pediatric oncology surgeons deal with the treatment of both malignant and benign tumors that occur in children.
Also, it often happens that pediatric surgeons can choose one of the numerous other subspecialties, such as plastic surgery, neurological surgery, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology and so on. It is the duty of the pediatric surgeon to correct disease, congenital conditions and traumatic injuries that occur in pediatric patients. These professionals also deal with diagnosing, preventing, treating and managing children who need surgical attention. Also, in most cases the pediatric surgeon works closely to the primary pediatric surgeon.

The first step towards becoming a pediatric surgeon is getting your undergraduate degree. After that you need to enroll in the medical school where you will focus on surgery, and then two extra years of training. During these two years, you will receive specialized training in the field of pediatric surgery. It is important for the pediatric surgeon to get a medical board certification and to undergo a written surgical examination – once the surgeon has managed to get their certification, they need to update it every ten years.
The certification exam must be given only after completing the five years of training in post-graduate general surgical residency. After sitting and passing the exam, these health care professionals will officially become board-certified pediatric surgeons, and their certification is provided by the American Board of Medical Specialists. A two-year pediatric surgery residency is often required.
