podiatristPodiatrists are medical doctors and must earn a Doctorate degree in Podiatric Medicine (DPM). The education involved in becoming a podiatrist includes 4 years undergraduate degree, 4 years Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree and an additional 3 years of residency training which involves medical and surgical training.

To be admitted into a Podiatric program, a candidate is required to have at least 3 years of college level studies with emphasis on biology, chemistry, physics and general subject areas such as English and Mathematics. Although a bachelor’s degree is not a pre-requisite for admission, in practice all candidates applying for the program have one. It is therefore advisable to earn your bachelor’s degree if you plan on applying for the DPM program. In general an applicant is also required to take and pass the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).

The courses that a podiatrist studies in college are very similar to other medical programs. They study subjects such as anatomy, disease pathology, pharmacology and other similar subjects. Parts of their last two years in Podiatric school are spent in gaining experience in hospital settings where to learn general surgery and emergency medicine.
