Surgeon Salary

Surgeons are indispensable health care professionals, and they can choose to either be general surgeons or to specialize in a certain subfield. Simply put, surgeons are skilled professionals who use their knowledge to diagnose patients with different conditions, to treat and prevent diseases as well as to repair injuries and to improve the aesthetic and physical appearance of the patient with the help of surgeries. These professionals use advanced medical technology and surgical instruments, and they must have a doctoral degree in order to be able to work legally. The median yearly salary of a general surgeon in the United States of America varies between $176,000 and $246,000 a year.

Pay Scale In Different Parts Of The United States

Surgeons receive different salaries across the United States of America. For instance, those who live and work in the state of North Carolina should expect to be paid over $233,000 a year, and so should those from the states of Rhode Island, Iowa as well as Nebraska. On the other hand, surgeries who live in Ohio and Kansas receive around $230,000 a year, and those from Florida are paid a median yearly wage of $228,000.

Surgeon Job Description

Surgeons are trained health care professionals who work with surgeries and different medical procedures. These professionals treat different parts of the body, from the liver and the colon to the gastrointestinal tract, the heart and even the brain of the patient. These professionals are skilled enough to perform a variety of medical surgeries, from the easiest ones such as removing the appendix or the gallbladder to the most difficult ones, like bariatric surgeries or colonoscopies.

These health care providers are trained to specialize both in invasive and in minimally invasive procedures, and the commonly use laparoscopies to treat different conditions. It often happens that after being trained as general surgeons, these professionals choose to specialize in one of the many subfields of surgery, such as organ transplantation, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery and many others. Cardiothoracic surgery is currently considered to be one of the most difficult, stressful and demanding areas, as these professionals may need to perform heart transplants or valve repairs which are particularly complicated.

The duties and responsibilities of these surgeons vary greatly, but they usually need to check the patient’s medical history prior to the surgery, to assess the overall physical condition of the patient, to prescribe treatments both before and after the surgery as well as to direct and coordinate other members of the medical staff, such as the assistants, the residents, the interns, other physicians and nurses.

It is also the duty of the surgeon to examine the patient and to inform both him and the family about their medical condition and about all the risks each surgery carries. It is very important for these professionals to stick to the previously established surgical techniques in order to address a problem or a condition, and then to refer the patient to another medical specialist, if case. The surgeon also conducts research work in order to develop and improve the existing surgical techniques, that can lead to better, more satisfactory post operative results.

It is also the responsibility of the surgeon to carefully examine all the medical equipment and tools found in the operating room in order to make sure that they are all sterile, and to prepare the case histories for the patient. These professionals often work close to surgeons and other physicians to diagnose different orthopedic or bodily disorders and conditions, and to provide an efficient and individualized treatment.

surgeonsThe first step toward becoming a surgeon is getting your high school diploma or your GED, and then get your Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Science. After you enroll in med school you will study subjects like maths, chemistry, physiology, biology as well as English. The med school typically takes four years to complete, and at the end of the training session you will be awarded either a degree as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or a degree as an MD, or Doctor of Medicine.

Another essential aspect when it comes to becoming a good surgeon is completing the residency program, which must be done right after having graduated from the medical school. All you need to do is to choose the desired surgical residency program in the area in which you want to specialize, and then find a hospital where you can practice. The length of the residency program can vary greatly depending on the chosen specialization, but on average, it should last anywhere between 3 and 8 years.

After you have finished the residency training as well, it is important to apply for the licensure and to get licensed. The eligibility requirements for licensure involve having completed the four years of med school training along with the entire residency training. If you meet these two requirements, you can then sit for the final written exam followed by the practical examination.

Certification

One of the most important aspects of becoming a surgeon is getting your certification. All surgeons in the United States of America are certified by the ABS, or the American Board of Surgery, which is an independent and non-profit organization. The ABS only certified those applicants that have managed to meet all the training, education and knowledge requirements, and who have completed a surgical residency program of at least five years. The exams are comprehensive and they cover essential aspects like general surgical oncology, palliative medicine, surgery of the hand, surgical critical care, pediatric and vascular surgery as well as general surgery.
