If you want to become a forensic science technician, you should know that this require a lot of attention to small details coupled with patience and great critical thinking abilities. Formal education is equally important as well and most professionals who want to fill an entry-level position in forensic science only require a two-year degree. Even so, most of the forensic science technicians have a Bachelor’s Degree in the field, given the fact that it opens many doors and increases the job opportunity.

After getting their diploma, forensic science technicians typically start their traineeship under the close supervision of an older, more trained and more experienced forensic scientist that will teach him the basics of biology, chemistry and such. This is a job that involves a great deal of responsibility, but which is very rewarding at the same time. After a couple of years of practical, hands-on training the forensic science technician will be asked to complete various evidence analysis assignments without the supervision of their mentor. As the years pass, you will become a supervisor for a new trainee and the cycle repeats itself. Most of the forensic science technician jobs that are available nowadays are offered within different federal law enforcement offices, local or state offices and so on.

Certification

In addition to the Bachelor’s Degree and the practical experience that are both extremely important for the future career of a forensic science technician, the certification is an aspect of paramount importance as well. Those who want to get certified and to have a higher annual income should know that forensic scientists receive their certification from the ABC, acronym that stands for the American Board of Criminalistics.

In order to be eligible for the certification, you must firstly have a Bachelor’s Degree in a natural science field as well as to have a minimum of two years experience in the field. You can opt for two certifications: the Fellow Certification and the Diplomate Certification Forensic Science Technician. Both of these certifications require you to sit for an exam that lasts for three hours and to pass it. If you do not have the necessary expertise in the field, then you can also sit for an Affiliate Membership Certification.
