Job description of a pharmacy technician

What does a pharmacy technician do? They work primarily under the supervision of a qualified pharmacist. Their primary duty is to help prepare and distribute medication to patients. They count tablets and pills, label bottles and fulfill prescriptions. They sometimes talk to patients and send back information to pharmacists.

Pharmacy technicians working in a hospital setting may have extra duties. They may be required to read patient charts and prepare and give medication to patients. This must be done under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Technicians record information about the prescription onto patient’s profile. They spend a long time preparing medication supplies for different patients. This is usually to meet the patient’s daily dose needs. This includes counting, weighing, mixing and labeling medications. The preparation is stored in the patient’s medication cabinet. A supervising pharmacist will then check this for accuracy before it is delivered to the patient.
